Tips for fading or cutting your own hair at home

Don’t Rush

The main thing to do when cutting your own hair at home is to make sure you do not rush. It’s just you there and you’re learning so take your time and pay attention closely to the things that you are doing while you are cutting your hair such as the texture of your hair, how the guards affect your texture hair and how the clipper is performing as well while cutting your hair these things you will get more comfortable with overtime. Also be comfortable with making mistakes remember, take a little off of your hair whenever you are cutting it because you can’t put the hair back on lol but you can remove more so that is the first piece of advice that I would give anyone who is deciding to cut their hair at home and save a little bit of money by not going to the barbershop.

Use good tools

Good tools are key as well to performing a good haircut at home yourself. The reason why you want good tools is because some people will take the cheap way out, after all that is the entire reason for cutting your hair at home is to save money but you do not want to skip with cheap equipment. I would suggest purchasing the same type of equipment that a Barber would use even though you are cutting your hair at home yourself. This will save you more money over time by purchasing quality equipment that professionals use because by going the cheap route and purchasing cheaper tools or inexpensive tools that a professional Barber wouldn’t use you will end up replacing those tools over overtime when I say tools I’m speaking of hair, clippers, and hair trimmers, electric shavers, guards, etc. this is a mistake I made years ago when I begin cutting my own hair I had started with a cheap pair of clippers that my father purchased me. He eventually purchased me a professional grade of hair clippers, but the first pair that he purchased me was maybe $20 and they would overheat and it didn’t have an adjustable lever on it and it would cut my skin. It was just a bad experience and I would not recommend anyone having to go through  because it’s just gonna be costly and you’re gonna replace those cheap inexpensive tools eventually anyway, but with a professional brand and grade of tools, you can keep those for years on end and the only thing you would have to replace overtime is the blade and that’s normal even for us professional barbers

Clean Hair

Clean hair is very important when cutting your own hair at home and also when you get a haircut at a barbershop, the reason why you want clean hair is we don’t want to cut our hair with oil or grease or gel or any other hair product in it because this will hinder our ability to fade  with clippers or remove bulk or use shears and this will affect you getting a quality haircut and getting the best performance out of your tools meaning hair, clippers, and trimmers and shears. In the African-American community, we love a crisp haircut with a sharp edge up in a blurry fade and how we get this professional look as barbers is by cleaning the hair before we cut a client’s hair or we have certain materials or products that we can use to strip oil from the hair so we can achieve that dry look that makes the edge up or lineup look sharp when we are finished with a haircut. And lastly, I would suggest that you cut your hair in a room with a comfortable temperature. You don’t wanna be in a room that the temperature is high where you will get hot or begin to sweat. This is something that you do not want to do. This will cause your skin to be soft and easily cut if you are hot and sweaty while cutting your hair with clippers and trimmers so these are my tips for all you that have the courage to cut your own hair at home. These things are just good base fundamentals and tips to look out for. I wish you all the good luck and cutting your own hair and remember take your time. Use good tools clean your hair and take off a little bit at a time and not too much at one time because you can always take off more but you can’t put the hair back when you have cut it off. You all be blessed and have a great day.
