The Experienced Barber

Barber career and happiness

Independence as a barber is one of the main things that I value about this career choice. The reason that I say this is that you have to be a certain type of personality and have a certain type of discipline to be able to be self-employed and to work alone or just be accountable and responsible just for what you do on a day-in and day-out basis without someone looking over your shoulder like a supervisor or a boss that’s typically there in a corporate setting. This is what I value most or one of the things I value most about the barbering career that I chose. I get to do what I want how I want on my own terms.

Something else that I value about being self-employed and choosing the barbering industry as my field is that I get to work with my hands. I love working with my hands and the feeling that I get after I finish someone’s haircut or style, and I see the smile on their face, and it also gives me a feeling of satisfaction when I see the great work that I have completed and I saw with my own vision and then I made happen with my own hands. That is a priceless feeling, and this allows me to fulfill the creativity that I have within myself as well as you know just to get to just relax. There’s something relaxing about cutting someone’s hair in the sound of the clippers and the angles that we have to use, you know, to when we edge up a client in a different type of head shape, and you know things like that in the fade.

Another cool thing about what makes me happy to be a barber and I believe will make anyone else that’s reading this blog happy and satisfied about becoming a barber or being a barber is the conversations that we have with all the different types of clients that come in and out of our chair on a daily, yearly basis. I have learned so many things from several different types of people from so many different walks of life throughout my three decades plus of cutting hair. This definitely is one of the most rewarding aspects of choosing barbering as a career as opposed to many other fields where you might not interact with as many people as we do on a daily basis from different walks of life, so I definitely do appreciate the conversations and the different types of people that I meet and have met as a barber.

Freedom is another aspect that I truly value about being a barber. I remember when I was young and I was first starting to cut hair and learning to cut hair. I was about 12 years old, 11 or 12 somewhere around here, but I was cutting my family members’ hair, and my grandmother always told me, “With this skill, you will never ever be broke.” I didn’t understand that at that time, but now I understand it fully, and because of this feeling, I love the feeling of freedom that barbering gives me. There are many other fields that you can do to be self-employed, but specifically, I’m talking about us as barbers, and why I love barbering and why I appreciate this career field of choice of mine. And I do, I really love the freedom that comes along with barbering and that I don’t ever have to worry about being fired. I know I will always work. I will always have a way to make some money in a way to make a living for myself as long as I put into work and I do what I need to do on my business as well as the creative part, you know, in the conversational part with my customers and clients and everything. So if you do this, meaning take care of your business end of what of the barbering field, you will never have to worry about the threat of losing a job or not being employed as long as you’re taking care of your business and you always have the activity of your limbs and your health, and you could and you could cut hair. It’s always something that you can do for yourself, and I love that freedom that it gives me. I thank God for that often and I appreciate that so much about this career field choice that’s giving me the ability to work for myself and the flexibility that comes along with it as well, but yes, freedom as a barber is definitely one of the benefits of this career field.
