African American and Biracial men/boys hair care tips for different styles

Today I’d like to share how we as black men should take care of our hair as well as how to take care and maintain some of the different hairstlyles that we normally wear from waves to afro to the nappy look with a fade.

As black men we should wash our hair 2 to 3 times per week depending on how active we are with exercise and sports activities. Ive read and heard of some who suggest washing our hair everyday and that’s a big no no because that will dry out our scalps. Every time we wash our hair we are stripping the scalp and hair of all of our natural and unatural oils that we need to keep our scalp and hair healthy.  Think of our scalp as soil and our hair as a seed. The healthier the soil the healthier the seed will be so the if the scalp is healthy the hair will be healthy as well.

To help keep the scalp healthy we must oil our hair every time we wash our hair and every day we groom our hairstyles daily as part of our daily haircare routine

Wave Hairstyles: you will need durag/ Hair Grease and pomade/ 100% Boar bristle brush medium to medium soft brush bristle.

The best way to style your waves will be when your out of the shower and the hair is damp. From this point you will want to use your hair grease  and make sure to rub the grease into your scalp using the same motion you use when washing your hair, next you will brush your hair in the same direction as your hair naturally flows. next you will get a small amount of your pomade and rub some into your hands and graze your hands over your hair using the pomade as a glaze over your hair or wave pattern and then tie your durable on top and this is the proper way to style you wave style.

Nappy style/ Afro: you will need an Afro pik/ Sponge brush/ Twist hair comb. I get many clients that have this hairstyle and most of them don’t know how to maintain it properly. They typically just grow their hair and come get a cut, but underneath all the hair when they come in to get a cut is a lot of flaking and dryness and irritation because they don’t get enough oil down to the scalp. If any at all and that will cause issues  and discomfort. So the proper way to take care of the Afro or the Nappy Fro is to wash 2 to 3 times a week and get oil to the scalp. Getting oil to the scalp isn’t as simple as it is with the shorter style the waves. With the afro you will need to part the hair in sections with a comb and put the oil directly to the scalp. That is the hardest part of caring for the Afro or Nappy Afro. After you oil the scalp you can use the sponge brush or twist comb on your hair moving them in a counter clock wise motion until your desired look is achieved.
